Man Charged with Arson

Mark Eric Fisher, Jr., 22, of a Covington address, has been charged with arson in the first degree after unscrewing the nozzle from a gas can and pouring gasoline on the front porch of a residence on Starling Drive in Turtle Cove while a female and a young child were inside.

Mr. Fisher also was charged with multiple other crimes as a result of his alleged actions as follows:

•Terroristic threats after threatening he was going to burn his ex-girlfriend and her brother.

•Cruelty to children in the third degree for committing violence in the presence of a child.

•Criminal trespass for kicking and damaging a door and the door frame.

•Battery for striking a victim with a closed fist causing visible injury to the subject’s head and face.

•Battery/family violence for biting the hand of another victim.

Mr. Fisher was arrested by a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) about 10 p.m. Sunday, and was granted a $14,000 bond Tuesday evening. As of press time Wednesday, he was still in the Jasper County Jail.

Other arrests made by the JCSO during the period of December 3-10 include the following:

•Chelsey Renee Guthrie, 20, Monticello—homicide by vehicle in the second degree, motor vehicle keeping a safe distance from a bicycle, driver exercise due care, duty to avoid distractions (two counts), improper passing of a vehicle proceeding in the same lane and following too close.

•Scott Wesley Mayfield, 51, Monticello—hold for warrant in Clayton County.

•Dustin Lee Raynor, 18, Social Circle—probation violation.

•Christopher Montez Thomas, 19, Shady Dale— Jasper County Magistrate Court bench warrant.

•Walker Leon Kent, 60, Mansfield—false swearing.

•Kenneth Anthony Thurman, 50, Monticello—child support.

During this same period deputies with the JCSO responded to 124

calls for service including 31 stopping suspicious person/vehicle, 15 attempt to serve warrant, eight subject needs officer seven assist motorist, six each alarm and accident, five escort or convoy, four each domestic, livestock on road and music/noise complaint.

Also, three each mechanical breakdown, vandalism of property and sex offender check, two each intoxicated driver, welfare check, discharge firearms, trouble unknown and road hazard, one each fight, dog disturbance, speeding auto, fight, theft by taking, mental person, wanted/stolen indicated, miscellaneous ems, overdose, child custody case, juvenile complaint, possible suicide, checking location and identity fraud/theft.

Also, during the period mentioned above the Monticello Police Department (MPD) reported the following arrests:

•Ramon Arturo Jackson, 37, Monticello—probation violation.

•Leesa Ann Greenway, 51, Monticello—disorderly conduct.

•Noah Christopher Jackson, 22, Monticello—aggravated battery, participation in criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and probation violation.

•Marvis Armel Wyman, 33, Monticello—battery, criminal trespass and probation violation.

In addition, during this period the MPD responded to 60 calls for service including 16 stopping suspicious person/vehicle, eight escort or convoy, three alarm, two each speeding auto, accident, mental person, chest pain, subject needs officer, private property, trouble unknown, music/noise complaint, vandalism of property and abandoned vehicle, one each fight, domestic, assist motorist, intoxicated pedestrian, theft by taking, crowd disbursement, welfare check, juvenile complaint, threatening/harassing calls, checking location, trespassing and sick.
