Allene Gilliland Amos

Allene Gilliland Amos, 86, of Monticello, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at her residence.

Mrs. Amos was born in Siler City, N.C. to the late Thomas Jefferson Gilliland and Mary Lila Dixon Gilliland. She and her late husband, George Cecil Amos moved to Monticello 67 years ago and owned and operated a dairy farm.

Mrs. Amos was an active member of Smithboro Baptist Church and served as church pianist, clerk, and Sunday school teacher for many years. She was named “Jasper County Homemaker of 1964” and served as treasurer for the Central Baptist Association for a number of years. She was a founding parent of Piedmont Academy, and in 1983; she was the leading force in the fund raising campaign that resulted in a new library for Jasper County.

Before retirement, Mrs. Amos was the secretary for Piedmont Academy.

Along with her husband, Cecil Amos, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bill Gilliland, Howard Gilliland, and Ray Gilliland; and sisters, Dorothy Marley, Eunice Moore, and Mary Dunn.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Robert McMichael and Marsha Rabitsch of Monticello, and Nancy and Stan Patterson of Covington; grandchildren, Summer and Lee Dempster, Blake McMichael, Nathan and Dee Dee Manville, Scott and Kristi Manville, and Megan and Brian Boire; great-grandchildren, Kirkland Manville, Ashlee Manville, Brandon Manville, Valery Manville, Kate Manville, Bryce Boire, and Naya Boire; and sisters, Mozelle Fields and Shirley Edmisten of Siler City, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Smithboro Revs. Dale Parker, Stan Patterson, and Jeff Pangle will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Manville, Scott Manville, Robert McMichael, Brian Boire, Kirkland Manville, Lee Gilliland, Randy Gilliland, and Steve Fields.

Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
