‘Canes Fall To No. 1 Lamar

The ‘Canes played their third region game of the season versus Lamar County, the Number 1 team in Region AA, last Friday, and came up short, 47-7.

The ‘Canes traveled there and competed in a very tough game. However, the ‘Canes were unable to pull out the win.

The ‘Canes gained possession of the ball first. For our first drive of the game, we were unable to pick up a first down, but Jacob Cavender completed a short pass to Tra Jackson for a couple of yards. The ‘Canes were forced to punt, and not much later the Trojans scored their first touchdown of the evening.

Later in the first, Cavender did a great job of escaping from the pressure and ran for a ‘Canes first down. After that Cavender found Julius Matchett, but were just a few yards shy of the first down, so the ‘Canes were forced to punt again. It was a great punt by Thomas Deraney.

With nearly four minutes remaining in the quarter, the ‘Canes had great tackles by Jordan Stewart, Quincy Standifer, and Jordan Stone. On our next offensive drive, Cavender connected with Standifer with a first down for a 21 yard completion.

The Trojans scored one more time in the first, but Tra Jackson was on the tackle to send us in the next quarter, leaving the score 15-0.

With two minutes into the second quarter, Standifer blitzed on the back side and sacked the quarterback and caused him to fumble and the ‘Canes recovered the ball. After a couple first down completions from Cavender to Stone and Matthew Lawson, Stone punched it in for a ‘Canes touchdown. Deraney made the extra point making the score 21-7.

However, later in the second the Trojans scored two touchdowns.

On our next offensive drive, Cavender connected with Jackson for eight yards. Then Jackson found a gap and ran for a first down. As the ‘Canes continued to move the ball, Cavender connected with T.J. Farley for a short gain. To end the first half, Stone picked up another first down.

To start the third quarter, Jackson, Stone, Stewart, and Garrison Williams were on the first four tackles of the opening half. Then the Trojans drove the ball down field, and Stewart made a great goal line tackle.

However, it was not enough to stop the Trojans from scoring another touchdown. The Trojans tried to go for two, and Walt McMichael did a great job of reading the quarterback and intercepted the two point conversion attempt.

On the next offensive drive, Jackson rushed for another first down. Later in the drive, the ‘Canes were forced to another fourth down. So the ‘Canes set up in punt formation, but faked it to Standifer and he took it for 37 yards for a ‘Canes first down.

The Trojans scored one final touchdown to wrap up the third quarter, and the ‘Canes were held scoreless in the fourth quarter. The ‘Canes fought hard and came up short to the Trojans.

Also, Lane Thomas went down early in the game with a knee injury, so hopefully the injured ‘Canes get healthy and are ready to play this Friday against Crawford County for our annual Homecoming Game. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. Go ‘Canes!
