Piedmont Soccer Competes at State

Piedmont Academy’s varsity soccer teams both qualified for the GISA Class AA state tournaments, which began this week.

The Piedmont boys hosted Georgia Christian Monday as a result of their No. 2 seed. The Cougars were playing without several key team members, including leading scorer Nick Adamczyk, and fell 2-1 in overtime to see their season end.

Piedmont led 1-0 deep into the second half before Georgia Christian put two goals on the board, one in overtime.

“It was very unfortunate the way it ended,” coach Jake Landress said. “Plus, we weren’t at full strength. The boys improved throughout the season. It was a good learning experience after we lost so many key players to graduation from the previous season.”

The varsity boys finished the season 6-7 overall and 4-2 against region foes.

The Piedmont girls traveled to Terrell Academy Tuesday after earning a No. 3 seed. The Lady Cougars fell 4-1 despite playing well throughout the match.

“It was one of those games where we kept fighting and left it all on the field,” Landress said. “We couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities we had. Their keeper made some unbelievable saves. Against other teams, those attempts would have gone in.

Jordan Blackmon scored the lone goal for Piedmont in Tuesday’s contest.

Prior to the state playoff matches, the Piedmont teams were swept by Gatewood last Thursday in the regular season finale. The boys fell 5-3 despite two goals by Adamczyk and one from Nick Dimsdale.

The varsity girls were defeated by Gatewood 2-0 while the Middle School Lady Cougars fell 3-2. Sara Hammonds scored both goals for the Middle School girls.
