Imogene W. McGinnis
Imogene W. McGinnis of Madison died April 2, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, George S. McGinnis, also of Madison.
Born July 22, 1923, to Eugene W. Wood and Vera Samples Wood. Mrs. McGinnis was known to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and most children as “Mama George.” She was supervisor of the middle school cafeteria, serving lunch to over 1,000 children per day for 23 years. Most of the 23 years she served breakfast and lunch.
She did not officially start this career until age 46, when her youngest child also began school. She was known for her cooking, especially her cakes, her green thumb particularly with African Violets and her crocheted crafts. You never saw Mama George that she did not have a kind smile, a offer of food, and an inquiry about your health.
She spoke of her beloved husband as if everyone who knew her should also know him, and in most cases you did. She told of the adventures of raising her children often with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. You never left Mama George that you did not feel better.
She is survived by her beloved children, Mr. and Mrs. Allen G. McGinnis, Tommy McGinnis, Mr. and Mrs. George Cochran III, Mr. and Mrs. Richard W. McGinnis, all of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard G. Horton of Greensboro, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward R. Sellers of Dallas, TX.
