Piedmont Golfers Fall to Gatewood

Piedmont Academy’s golf team fell for the first time this season last week during a match with long-time rival Gatewood.

“Let’s just say the weather was not ideal for scoring,” said Piedmont coach Wes Tanner. “The course played very rough with the conditions. As a team, we did not putt very well. On a positive, we were able to take some of our younger players and I was extremely proud of how they did.”

Chase Olson, Hunter Pope and Chandler Burrell performed well despite the conditions, Tanner said.

P.J. Leonetti also played well and was the team’s low medalist from the No. 4 spot in the lineup.

“Even though we did not play well as a team, it is encouraging to see our younger golfers getting better and enjoying the sport,” Tanner said.

“This will mean good things for us when region arrives. Having team depth is key. Everyone is going to have an off day here and there and it’s important to have other golfers who can help pick up the slack.”

The Piedmont golfers will return to the course April 11 in a home contest against Gatewood.
