Middle School ‘Canes Lose to Social Circle

The Jasper County Middle School Hurricane baseball team lost to Social Circle last Friday, 5-3, after the Redskins took advantage of some first inning jitters that the ’Canes had.

Numerous walks and a couple of key fielding errors helped Social Circle at the plate with the opposing team scoring three runs in the first inning.

The Hurricane offense had no answer, but defense settled down after the first inning and held the Redskins to just two runs the rest of the game.

Robert Womack pitched well and he was helped by some sparkling defensive play. Colton Clay, left fielder; Matthew Lawson, in center and Kyle Smith at short stop each made spectacular diving catches to snuff out Redskin threats in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Meanwhile the Hurricane offense chipped away at the lead and were behind 4-3 going into the seventh inning.

Braden Lynch pitched well in relief in the seventh inning, however, the Redskins managed to get one last insurance run in.

The ’Canes were unable to even the score in the seventh before the end of the game.

“I am pleased with the way our team did not give up. After being down 3-0 the boys held together and played hard the rest of the game. I feel that our team has the best defense in the region but our hitting needs some work and we need to play relaxed from first pitch to last,” said head coach John Graybill.

The Middle School ’Canes are scheduled to face Putnam Co. today, March 28 at 4:30 p.m.
