Cougars Earn Region Win Tuesday

Piedmont Academy opened region baseball play Tuesday with a 5-3 win against Arlington.
The game was hosted by the Cougars after Arlington coaches were unable to get their field ready following Monday’s rain. Zach Beggs earned the win going all seven innings.
Piedmont (4-2 overall, 1-0 in region) fell behind 3-0, but battled back for the victory. A 3-run fourth inning helped propel the Cougars to the win.
Logan Partenza, Josh Williams, Malcom Tyler, Mac Brittain and Jared Smith helped lead Piedmont offensively.

“It was a good game,” Cougar coach Danny Camp said. “Arlington is a good team with solid pitching and defense. Their lineup is strong throughout. Zach pitched an outstanding game and we made the plays when we had to.”
To be able to battle back showed a great deal about the team’s character, the coach said.
“Last year, it might have gotten away from us,” Camp said. “It was good to battle back in our first region game.”
Prior to Tuesday, the Piedmont baseball team fell to Brentwood on the road Friday in a battle against the defending Class AA state champion.
Piedmont fell 10-0 in a game which was competitive for the first four innings. The host Eagles led 1-0 after the third inning before scoring two more in the fourth and five more in the fifth.
Brentwood’s two runs in the bottom of the sixth ended the contest.
Brittain earned the start for Piedmont, working three innings and allowing four hits and one earned run. He registered four strikeouts with one walk.
At the plate, Smith and Beggs led the Piedmont offense.
Piedmont’s scheduled game Monday against Covenant was postponed due to the weather. A makeup date has not been set.
Piedmont will host Central Fellowship Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. and Covenant at 3 p.m. The Cougars will also host Harvester Christian for a region contest Monday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m.
