Piedmont Boys Soccer Open with Win

The Piedmont Academy soccer teams ushered in the 2013 season Thursday with a trip to John Milledge Academy.

The varsity boys took a 3-1 win on the strength of two goals by sophomore Nick Adamczyk.

“You could tell it was everyone’s first match,” said assistant coach Jake Landress.

Piedmont held a 3-0 halftime advantage.

“We were pleased with the result due to our limited numbers of practices, but we also found a lot of things to improve on before the next game,” said head coach Dwain Landress.

The coaches said several players stood out including Austin Bass, Owen Kimball, Barrett Whitaker, Malik Reid, Mills Smith and Adamczyk.

Kimball also had a strong defensive match in goal.

The varsity Lady Cougars played to a 2-2 tie. Since the match was non-region, coaches agreed not to play overtime.

Haley Tyler and Heather Tyler both scored a goal for Piedmont.

“We didn’t want to risk losing anyone to injury at this stage of the season,” Coach Landress said.

The varsity girls played the late match and had to deal with less-than-desirable weather conditions.

“We had more chances to score but were just unlucky,” said head coach Dwain Landress. “However, this year’s team has several freshmen who will play a part of this team’s success.”

Carley Cain, Audrey Cleary, Lucy Strickland, Jordan Blackmon and Lanie King all played well, the Piedmont coaches said.

Piedmont’s Middle School girls fell 3-0 to John Milledge.

“We have a new team this year,” Jake Landress said of the Middle School squad. “We only have four players returning from last season so it’s a brand new start. We were a little slow to start but you could tell that we are already getting better and learning each day. The day after the match, we had a very sound practice.”

Piedmont will play at Gatewood in Eatonton today, March 7, with varsity matches beginning at 6 p.m. The Middle School girls will also compete at 5 p.m.

All three teams will play their home opener Friday against Mt. De Sales. Matches begin at 5 p.m.
