Charles Edgar Standifer

Charles Edgar Standifer, 71, of Monticello, died February 25, 2013 at Abbey Hospice.

Mr. Standifer was born to the late John R. Standifer and Lottie B. Odom Standifer on October 5, 1941.

He received his education from Jasper County Training School. Upon finishing school he joined the U.S. Air Force where he traveled to many places and afforded his wife and children the opportunity to live in many states across the United States.

While in the service he obtained a degree in accounting from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, TX. He later obtained an electrical and plumbing license from Griffin Area Tech in Griffin.

After moving his family back to Monticello, Mr. Standifer was employed by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher and later became self employed in home improvements until his health failed him.

Mr. Standifer began his spiritual journey with the Lord at St. James A.M.E. Church in Monticello at an early age. He loved the Lord and displayed this love everyday with his unconditional giving and loving spirit. He was a silent giver and never wanted nor expected praise from others. He loved to worship the Lord through song and many people were blessed and enjoyed listening to him sing. One of his favorite songs to sing was It is No Secret what God can do; which he sung to his wife on many occasions. Other favorites included, Through it All, Peace in the Valley and Something About the Name Jesus.

Mr. Standifer married his best friend and the love of his life, Mary Lois Jackson Standifer on August 25, 1961. The couple bore four children, Angela, William, Bryan, and Sharon, all of Monticello. His devotion to his family was his first priority and his love to them was unconditional and never-ending.

Along with his wife and children, survivors include, special daughter and sons-in-law, DeSonia and Greg Sands, of Monticello and Wynona and Kim Price of Atlanta; a sister, Anita Campbell of Conyers, two brothers, Richard Standifer of Atlanta and Kenneth Standifer of Monticello; five other adopted children five Godchildren, 37 grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Standifer was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie Cleve Standifer, Robert Standifer, and Earnest Standifer; an adopted daughter, Alice Louise Goolsby; grandson Nigel K. Griffey; adopted son, William Talmadge;

A celebration of life for Charles Edgar Standifer was held Saturday, March 2, 2013 St. James A.M.E. Church,  514 Funderburg Drive, Monticello. Bishop Preston W. Williams, Elder Earle Hill and Pastor Donna Marie Calix, officiated.

Burial was in Smith-Thomas Cemetery, with repast at St. James A.M.E. Church Fellowship Center.

Pallbearers included Quinton Standifer, Keith Standifer, DeWayne Standifer, Melvin Minter, Douglas Standifer, Fernell Campbell, Derrick Standifer and Dwarcka Jackson.

Flowergirls included Michelle Standifer, Lettye Banks, Lee Lynwood, Marlo Smith, Pearl Bray, Tracilin Davenport, Kim Standifer, Lanita Banks, Angela Pinkney, Hope Davis, Dionka Jackson, and Sandra Carter.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Funderburg Drive, Monticello, was in charge of arrangements.
