Charles Augustus “Speedy” Lee Campbell
Charles Augustus ‘Speedy’ Lee Campbell, 74, of Monticello died, Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013.
Mr. Campbell was born in Monticello to the late Barron Sr. and Beatrice Campbell. He was the first of nine children. At an early age, he became a member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Monticello.
“Speedy” was educated in the Jasper County School System, and became employed at 18 by the Jasper County School system as a bus driver. He loved his job and was known for his concern for the safety of the students. During his 44 and a half years as a bus driver he received many noteworthy recognitions and accommodations such as “Bus Driver of the Millennium,” “Perfect Attendance,” and “Bus Driver of the Year.”
He also loyally worked at Monticello Family Foods, formerly known as Food Pride/Red and White, until the day before his death.
He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge #329, where he served as treasurer.
Mr. Campbell was married to Mary Arlene Bell on December 11, 1960 and together they were blessed with two wonderful daughters. Speedy loved his family and would willingly make sacrifices to ensure their well-being.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Barron Jr., Emmet, Johnny, and Alfred.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 52 years, include children and spouses, Jaquita and James Bullard of Monticello, Wanda and Vincent Bruden of Lilburn; four grandchildren and spouses, Cassandra and Christopher Dearro of Monticello, Cameron and Jazmine Burden of Lilburn, Saniyah Bullard of Monticello; two great-grandchildren, Christion and Cassiah Dearro, of Monticello; sisters, Juanita Mercer of Decatur, Deborah Clemons of Oxford, and Constance Campbell of Monticello; two brothers, Willie Campbell of Lima, Ohio, and Melvin Campbell of Monticello; uncle, Frobel Cochran of Montezuma, and a host of relatives and friends.
A celebration of life is set for today, Thursday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at Griggs Chapel AME Church, 724 Griggs Chapel Road, Eatonton, GA 31024. Rev. Melvin Henry, officiating. Burial will be held at Campbell Cemetery in Monticello with repast at the Griggs Chapel Annex.
Smith and Sons Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
