’Canes Baseball Begins Monday at GMC

DIAMOND ’CANES PRACTICE DAILY AS THE 2013 SEASON OPENS MONDAY

It may still be cold but the baseballs are flying and gloves are popping, and the ’Canes are scheduled to play their game this coming Monday, February 25, versus GMC in Milledgeville at 5:00 pm Their home opener is scheduled next Friday versus Jackson, also at 5:00 pm.

The team only has three returning starters from last year and will be playing a lot of young and inexperienced players, especially on the mound.

“That’s our main area of concern right now,” Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins said. “We have some good arms but they don’t have a lot of experience. We tried to work some of the younger guys in last year, but we had several seniors who were our go-to guys in the pitching position, which made it difficult to get younger players in down the stretch during the playoff push.

“Catching is our strong position because we have Senior Pat Clement back, who will be a four-year starter. We’re glad to have Pat out here because he stabilizes things, and we believe him to be the best defensive catcher in the region.

“We like what we’ve seen so far, we’re just young. We graduated seven seniors last year and the majority of them were four-year starters. It’s going to be a tough transition, but it’ll be a fun one.”

Junior Varsity Coaches and assistants to Coach Jenkins include Coach Zack Lively and Coach Matt Riden.
