Mat ‘Canes Win; Host Senior Night

The ’Canes celebrated Senior night Tuesday evening as they hosted the Northeast and Baldwin wrestling teams in an individual tournament Senior night at home.
Monticello won over both Baldwin, 63-12 and over Northeast, 71-0.
There was a brief recognition program in which Head Coach, Andy Rewis recognized and honored the Senior Mat ’Canes.
The seniors included, Victor Vargas-Bautista, Patrick Clement, Alex Davis, Brian Harper, Oscar Sandoval, and Jordan Weaver.
Senior, two time captain Clement won his 197th win for the hurricanes. This is the most wins in school history.
Prior to Tuesday the team traveled to Covington last Friday and Saturday to compete in the 21-team East Metro Invitational Tournament, where the managed to place fifth after being narrowly edged out of fourth.
Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis said, “We were in fourth place going into the last round, up by five points, but Loganville eased ahead of us by one point which dropped us into fifth place.
It was a tough tournament with Oconee finishing in first place, Social Circle in second, Clarke Central in third and Loganville in fourth.
“This was also an individual tournament. What we try to do leading up to the state competition is to wrestle in as many of these as possible.” said the coach.
Upcoming matches for the Mat ’Canes include the Redskin Rumble in Social Circle this Saturday, Jan. 26, beginning at 9 a.m., and another road trip to Jefferson next Tuesday, Jan. 29, to face Jackson County at 5 p.m.
