Deer Festival Celebrates Opening of Deer Season

Jasperite Dean Rago killed this eight-point buck while hunting in Jasper County during the second weekend of gun season.
To see more deer like this, as well as some does killed by youth hunters, and lots more, one need only turn to the special Deer Festival section inside today’s paper.
The section includes all you need to know about this Saturday’s festival which features more than 110 vendors, including more arts and crafts than seen in recent years.

The Deer Capital will have its annual Deer Wall on the Courthouse steps, and offer information for hunters and landowners. Charlie Killmaster will offer information during two seminars—one at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
And, of course, the day’s festivities kick off with a fun run at 7:30 a.m., followed by a 5K “Deer Dash” at 8 a.m.
A special children’s area will be located across from the Monticello Post Office, and will feature, among other things, a human hamster ball.
Great entertainment is planned throughout the day, so festival-goers can take a load off and sit and listen a while, then return to the exhibits around the Square.
The program featuring the crowning of the Deer Festival queen begins at 2 p.m., and the annual parade will begin at 3:30 p.m., possibly the latest ever.
Jasper County is the Deer Capital of Georgia, that it is celebrated here this week!
