Lady ‘Canes Continue to Win

MORGAN STUDDARD PITCHES

The Lady ’Canes defeated the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes twice in a double header 7-0 last Wednesday. These wins enable the Lady ’Canes to host round two of the state playoffs, with another double header scheduled for yesterday, Oct. 17 vs. Bacon Co.

In the first game, Taylor Garrett was on the mound and held the Purple Hurricanes to no runs. She was great offensively as well as defensively. The entire Lady ’Cane team did well defensively, with C.J. Jackson, Janee Chapman, and Kaitlin Needham catching some extremely well hit balls in the outfield.

Garrett, Morgan Studdard, Destiny Glawson, KeAusha Warren, Beth Hart, and Aaliyah Barnes did well making each stop and stopping the go ahead run in the infield.

The ’Canes bats heated up in game one, earning seven hits.

Morgan Studdard was on the mound for the Lady ’Canes and got three strike outs and allowed no runs.

The hitting was led by Destiny Glawson going 2-for-4 with a single and a RBI triple in the seventh. Also 2-for-4 were Janee Chapman with two singles and three stolen bases, and Taylor Garrett, and C.J. Jackson with two singles and two stolen bases each.

Aaliyah Barnes was also 2-for-3 with two singles. Kaitlin Needham was 2-for-4 with a single and a walk. Allison Scroggs added a hard hit single in the seventh.

Tierra Whitlock had three stolen bases while pinch running and Samantha Johnson also added a stolen base.

The third and the seventh innings were each beneficial to the ’Canes batting around each time, through all nine on the hitting roster. In the third the ladies added three runs while adding three in the seventh.

The Ladies played great defense throughout the game having easy 1-2-3 outs making for quick innings. There was a crucial double play to end the sixth and boost the morale as they took to the bat in the top of the seventh.

“Both games v. Fitzgerald were solid, all-around efforts. That was a team that had only been shutout once during the regular season, so it was pretty impressive to shut them out in both games. Morgan and Taylor did a great job of throwing strikes, which kept the defense alert,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins.

“We are playing our best ball of the season right now, so hopefully we can keep the momentum going against Bacon County. They are a very good team (26-6 record) with a couple of players that have signed with Division I Universities, but with the schedule we have played, I think our girls know that, when we are on top of our game, we can compete with anybody in the state.

“The winner of this series advances to the State Championship Round in Columbus, so it should be a great atmosphere, and we’re proud to have earned the right to play these games on our home field.”
