JV ‘Canes Play Well; Come up Short

The Junior Varsity ’Canes played well against Washington Wilkes last Thursday, and held the team 7-6 at the half. They drove the ball down the field on their first possession of the game. With a 3rd down and 8 on the Hurricane 48 yard line, Marcarius Middlebrooks swept around the left side of the line for a 40 yard gain down to the Tiger 12 yard line.
Three plays later, from the Tiger 8 yard line, Quarterback Jacob Cavender passed the ball to JuliusMatchett for a touchdown and the Hurricanes were on the board first 6-0. The Hurricanes were unsuccessful on the following two-point conversion.
Later in the first quarter, Washington-Wilkes tied the game on a long touchdown pass. The extra-point kick was good and Washington-Wilkes took the lead 7-6. Both teams moved the ball well in the first half but were unable to put anymore points on the board as the defenses stiffened in their own end of the field.
In the second half, the Hurricanes lost several key players and the results were voticable. The Tigers moved the ball well and were able to capitalize on some key mistakes and turnovers by the Canes.
I thought our team played very well in the first half. Thomas Deraney and Jamari Myrick were the defensive standouts. Deraney sacked the Tigers Quarterback several times, while Jamari got good penetration and stopped several running plays in the Tiger backfield. Both players put pressure on the Tiger offense throughout the game. Quaterback Cavender, running back Julius Matchett, and offensive tackle Joseph Caldwell had very good games on the other side of the ball.
While I was pleased at the way our team played in the first half, we need to work on putting together a complete game and become more fundamentally sound.
Their luck did not continue however, and after two more quarters, the ’Canes ended the game with a 34-6 loss. The boys played hard and are getting some time against teams that they will see when they move up to varsity.
The young boys are tough, and will be a force to reckon with once they get bigger, stronger and faster, said the coaches.
Above, Deraney sacks the quarterback and the defensive line including Tremaine Farley (41) and Garrett Scroggs (88) helped on the attack.
Julius Machett scored the ‘Canes only touchdown and was the lead rusher.
The JV ‘Canes will travel to Jackson today, Oct. 18, for a 5 p.m. non-region contest.
The Middle School ’Canes also lost to Loganville last Wednesday, after playing a great game through halftime.
