Lady Canes to Play in Region Championship Today

The Lady Canes won in their third game against Crawford County in the third game of their series sending them to face Bleckley County today, Oct. 4 in Cochran.

This win was the tiebreaker to see which team moved onto the final.

The Lady ’Canes won the first game in a nail-biter doubleheader against Crawford County in the final inning Tuesday.

The Lady Canes had a bye for the first round of region playoffs as they were tied for first with Bleckley Co. at the end of the regular season.

During the match-up with Crawford, Taylor Garrett pitched an excellent game allowing no runs in the first four innings.

There was no score by either team until the bottom of the fifth when Crawford put two runs across the plate, leading late.

The Lady Canes did well in the sixth with C.J. Jackson leading off with a single and a stolen base. Kaitlin Needham also had a single, but the ladies couldn’t get the base runners around and ended the sixth 2-0.

In the final inning of the first game, the Lady ’Canes held the Crawford Eagles to three quick outs and no additional runs scored.

It was then that the bats came alive for the ‘Canes. Janee Chapman, Garrett, Destiny Glawson, and Morgan Studdard all earned singles, making the base runners prominent. Then with two outs, C.J. Jackson got up to hit and slammed a game winning double, ending the game in an exciting, 3-2 win over Crawford.

Taylor Garrett had two strike outs on the mound and earned the win for the Lady ’Canes. Jackson led the hitting going 2-4 with two walks, a single and the game winning double. She was followed by Glawson, with a double and two singles and Needham and Garrett added two singles each.

Chapman, Studdard, and Beth Hart also added to the hit list with a single apiece.

During the second game, the Lady Eagles of Crawford led the scoring in the first. The Lady ’Canes failed to put any runners across the plate and Crawford added five.

There was no change in the second inning as Garrett battled her way through with three quick outs.

The Lady Canes nearly batted around in the third, with seven players earning hits. Studdard and KeAusha Warren each earned a double, while Chapman, Garrett, Glawson, and Jackson each had a single to put five runs on the board for a 5-5 tie going into the fourth.

The Lady Eagles earned three more runs in the fourth, and the Lady Canes had a double from Studdard and two stolen bases along with a single from Needham to add one run in the fifth.

The sixth ended with a score, 9-8, Crawford leading after Chapman ripped a ball and earned a triple, followed by Garrett and Studdard each with a double. The seventh was a quick inning as neither team allowed any runs with a final score of 9-8, Eagles.

Being that each team had one win each, they were schedueled to meet again, yesterday, Oct. 3 in one game that will determine which will advance to face Bleckley Co. in the Region Championship game that is scheduled for today, Thursday, Oct. 4.

If the ‘Canes win region they will host the first round of state playoffs next Wednesday.
