Lady Canes Beat Putnam for 1st Place Tie
The softball Lady ‘Canes defeated Putnam 10-2 last week to extend their region record to 6-1 and place them in a first place tie with Beckley County.
Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “Putnam was a big win for us. We were both tied for first place going into the game; it was Senior Night and they are a big rival, which made for a great atmosphere. We had great pitching and defense, and we were aggressive at the plate and on the bases.
“The win secured us a spot in the state playoffs for the eighth year in a row, which was one of the goals our seniors set for the team. The girls were excited after the game, but they knew there was still work to be done. It makes you proud as a coach to know your team isn’t just settling, but are setting their goals high and working hard to achieve them.”
The team gets a bye in the first round of region play offs and will face the winner of the Crawford vs. Taylor game. The ‘Canes will host the second round of the play offs next Monday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m., when they are scheduled for a double-header.
