Courts Hear Several Cases
Emmanuel Togba was indicted on the charges of rape, kidnapping and aggravated sodomy in February, after being charged in December, 2011.
He pled not guilty to the charges in March, and has been awaiting trial in the Jasper County Jail (JCJ) under a $100,000 bond. In a hearing Tuesday in Jasper Superior Court with Judge Hugh V. Wingfield, III, presiding, Mr. Togba filed for a reconsideration of bond, which was granted and his bond was reduced to $40,000. Sometime later in the day Mr. Togba posted bond and was released pending trial.
Two other cases were processed this week as follows:
•Clayton Beasley, who was on probation for conviction on three counts of obstructing officers and three counts of terroristic threats and acts, was found to have violated his probation by committing the new charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Mr Beasley was sentenced to serve five weeks in the JCJ followed by Intensive Probation Supervision and upon completion to return to regular probation.
•Vincent Kyle Dudley, who was on probation for conviction on the charge of theft by taking in March of 2012, was found to have violated his probation by testing positive for marijuana three consecutive times. Also, in a case that went to court on September 13, with Judge Hulane E. George, presiding, a decision was filed on September 25, in which a guilty plea was accepted for Shetara Robinson on the charge of attempting to obtain dangerous drugs by fraud. The court ruled to hold sentencing in abeyance pending Ms. Robinson’s performance in and compliance with the terms of the court, which were not made available to this reporter.
Last Week
During Criminal Motion Day Court September 11, with Judge William A. Prior, Jr., presiding, there was sufficient evidence presented to satisfy the court that Terri Lynn Tyler had violated her probation by the use of alcohol. Ms. Tyler was on probation for the conviction on three counts of obstruction of officers and false report of a crime in July, 2012. At that time Ms. Tyler was sentenced to 60-90 days in a State Detention Center, but allowed to remain free until bed space became available.
Effective immediately, Ms. Tyler will be confined to the Jasper County Jail (JCJ) until said bed space becomes available in a detention center. She was also ordered to have a substance abuse evaluation done, and upon release from the detention center be returned to regular probation as originally ordered.
Three other cases were resolved as follows:
•The court determined that Jessie James Griggs, who was on probation for the charge of aggravated assault in February, 2012, had violated his probation by failure to report as ordered. Mr. Griggs was sentenced to serve 60 days in the JCJ with credit for time served. He was also ordered to have a Mental Health Evaluation before being released, and upon completion be returned to regular probation.
•Vashon Leon Traylor, who was on probation for conviction on the charge of simple battery in May, 2012, was found to have violated his probation by testing positive for alcohol and marijuana. Mr. Traylor was sentenced to serve 30 days in the JCJ, with credit given for 19 days already served, and be returned to probation upon completion of sentence.
•Dester Lysander Daniels, who was on probation for conviction on the charge of reckless conduct in May, 2012, was found to have violated his probation by testing positive for marijuana. Mr. Daniels was sentenced to serve 14 days in the JCJ to be served on weekends while probation remains active.
Also, in a case that was on last week’s court calendar but which the details were not available at press time: Keon T. Standifer pled guilty to theft by taking and was sentenced to five years to be served on probation, fines and fees of $1,387 and restitution of $500.
