Lady Cougars Sweep Doubleheader at Home
The Piedmont Academy softball team added two more non-region wins to its season total Tuesday by sweeping the Gwinnett Lady Barons, a team comprised of home-schooled players.
The Lady Cougars earned 11-6 and 8-7 victories as Kacy Swart and Carla Martin earned the wins.
“We played much better today,” coach Danny Camp said. “We were facing a quality opponent.”
The Tuesday home games were a recent addition to the schedule after Oak Mountain did not field a team this fall.

Piedmont needed a few innings to get on track in a 17-0 win Monday at Bethlehem Christian Academy, but a 12-run sixth inning proved to be one of the deciding factors.
Martin allowed just two hits while striking out nine. Heather Tyler drove in four runs including a homer in the top of the sixth. Hailey Burnham was 5-for-5 and Cheyenne Galloway was 3-for-4.
Morgan Tillman and Amelia Dodson were both 4-for-4 while Martin was 3-for-4 at the plate. Also in Monday’s victory, Swart was 3-for-5 and Anna Jones and Brittany Germany were 2-for-2. Emily Hammonds was 1-for-2.
The Lady Cougars also defeated Arlington 12-0 in region action last Thursday. The win was the 200th career softball victory for Camp.
Team statistician Carole Tyler, who has been the official scorekeeper throughout Camp’s tenure as softball coach, helped put the postgame ceremony together to celebrate the milestone. Camp was soaked with the water cooler and players, parents and coaches were treated with a commemorative cake.
“It’s a team thing,” Camp said. “It definitely would not be possible without the hard work of many outstanding young ladies and players.”
In the game, Hailey Burnham was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Heather Tyler was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Tillman and Germany both finished with two RBI. As a team, Piedmont had 10 hits.
Martin earned the win throwing a no-hitter with four strikeouts. She did not allow a walk.
The Lady Cougars played two games Saturday at Tattnall Square Academy in Macon. In its first game, Piedmont fell to Brentwood 7-0 before losing a 3-2 decision to host Tattnall Square.
The bats went silent against Brentwood as the Lady Cougars struck out 15 times. The game was scoreless going into the fifth inning before the Lady Eagles broke through.
Martin recorded seven strikeouts for Piedmont while scattering six hits and two walks.
“They are just so good,” Camp said of Brentwood. “They were the state runner-up in AA last year and are now in AAA. It’s just hard to hold them down. We also don’t strike out that many times in a game often.”
Piedmont did play better against Class AAA Tattnall as Swart was effective on the pitcher’s mound.
“Kacy did a tremendous job,” Camp said. “She kept them off stride and stayed ahead in the count. We also made the routine plays. We knew going into Saturday what we were up against. It would have been real easy for the second game to get away from us. Being able to bounce back like we did, shows how much we have grown up.”
The Lady Cougars will travel to Flint River today, Sept. 13, for a 4 p.m. game before hosting Windsor Saturday at 11 a.m. The team will then travel to LaGrange Monday in a game rescheduled from earlier this season. Monday’s game will begin at 5 p.m.
