Deer Season Opens, ‘Deer Crazies’ Sought

DEER KILLED WITH BOW OPENING DAY

After 45 years of celebrating the whitetail deer at the annual Deer Festival, Jasper County now has the official designation as the Deer Capital of Georgia.

With new signs at all entrances in the county telling all that pass through or enter, there is no mistaking our claim to fame. All those who have helped the Deer Capital group by being a member, sponsor, or by supporting the group by attending events know that the designation is just the beginning.

There will be many new opportunities and places to keep the spirit of being “The Deer Capital of Georgia” alive this upcoming season.

One such event is the second annual Georgia Whitetail research symposium and banquet, which is scheduled in Athens for Thursday, Oct. 11. It will be held at the UGA Georgia Center on the University of Georgia campus. The fund raiser is co-hosted by the Deer Management Research Group and the Quality Deer Management Association.

The day’s agenda includes a research symposium in the afternoon followed by an evening banquet. A detailed list of presentation and additional information can be seen at http://www.qdma.com/events/athens-ga.-qdma-banquet-uga-whitetail-research-seminars.

Deer Capital made a contribution to DMRG last year, and plans to again this year. All “deer crazy” people are encouraged to support Deer Capital by buying posted signs and truck decals at the local check-in stations and through other local merchants.

In addition, Deer Capital shirts will soon be available, and everyone is asked to purchase and wear them to show their support for being the Deer Capital. Deer Capital founders are hoping a strong contingent will attend the DMRG banquet in Athens and wear their Deer Capital shirts.

A meeting is planned for next Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at El Giro Mexican Restaurant for all businesses that are interested in being a check-in station.
