Craig Salmon, Gene Trammell Win Runoffs

The Jasper County Commission is assured of a new look in January, even though three races are yet to be decided.

The two races that have no Democratic contender will see new faces.

By virtue of Tuesday’s runoff, Gene Trammell becomes the commissioner-elect for District 3, defeating incumbent Commissioner Jack Bernard, 380-201, or with 65 percent of the vote.

In District 4, the only other race with a runoff, Craig Salmon defeated Lee Simmons, 187-126, a 60-40 ratio, to win the Republican nomination. Mr. Salmon will face Joan Bell in November.

Incumbent District 4 Commissioner Mary Patrick did not seek re-election.

In District 5, Doug Luke defeated incumbent Commissioner Alan Cox in the primary July 31, and there is no Democratic candidate.

Incumbent District 1 Commissioner Carl Pennamon, a democrat, is facing a challenge from Nancy Baeder, a Monticello woman who qualified as an independent.

In District 2, incumbent Democratic Commissioner Charles Hill faces a challenge from Republican Bruce Henry.

Those three races will be decided in the general election in November.
