’Canes Learn from Scrimmage

The ’Canes traveled to Commerce last Thursday for a scrimmage with East Jackson High School, and Head Football Coach Eddie Roberts seemed to think what the team got out of it was well worth the trip.

Coach Roberts said, “It gave us an opportunity to see exactly where we are, and it was also an opportunity for all our young kids to get some live action. We played everyone, including all of our young kids in the fourth quarter, and they played pretty well considering the limited number of reps they’ve had at practice.

“It also gave us an opportunity to get some film to give us an indication of what we need to work on.”

There was one aspect of the scrimmage the coach wasn’t happy with.

“Offensively we had too many turnovers. We ran 16 offensive plays in the first half and five of them turned into fumbles. That was disappointing. We also had some trouble with the exchange from the center to the quarterback. I found out we are not in shape. We need to get into better shape between now and August 31.

“I knew we would make some mistakes being as young and inexperienced as we are, but we just have to take better care of the football on offense.

“To get ready for our first game versus Morgan we’ll have to get better as a team, and we have almost two weeks to do that. We’ll spend a couple of days correcting the mistakes we had in the scrimmage.

“What we have to do is take care of all the little details. We have a lot of work to do.”

A broken nose was the extent of injuries sustained in the scrimmage, which the coach feels will be healed by Friday, Aug. 31, when the team travels to Morgan County for its first game of the season in a non-region contest versus the Region 8-AAA team.
