Lady Cougars Open Season with Wins
Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team began the new season on a successful note with a 9-0 victory against John Milledge Friday.
The game was the first to be played under the lights at Coy Goodman Memorial Stadium.
“It was a great night,” coach Danny Camp said. “We had great weather and it turned out to be everything I expected and hoped it would. We had a great atmosphere.”
Carla Martin earned the win working four scoreless innings. Kacy Swart finished things up with a scoreless fifth inning.
Martin set the tone for the game in the top of the first needing just six pitches to get out of the inning. She forced John Milledge batters to hit three grounders. Martin did not allow a hit and recorded three strikeouts. Swart recorded two strikeouts in her inning of work.

Heather Tyler and Swart helped the Lady Cougars get on track offensively in the bottom of the first with two runs. Piedmont added four additional runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to take complete control.
Tyler finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Swart was 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored. Hailey Burnham was 1-for-1 with two walks and Cheyenne Galloway was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Anna Jones and Brittany Germany also helped pace the offense in the season opener.
“The momentum fell our way early and I think that helped deflated John Milledge,” Camp said. “We have some things to work on, but I was pleased by the effort. I was definitely pleased with how we did for the first game.”
Tyler recorded several strong defensive plays at third base.
The Lady Cougars also defeated Briarwood 8-4 on the road Tuesday. Martin recorded her second win.
“We didn’t play that well although we played well enough to win,” Camp said.
Piedmont jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Briarwood pulled to within 5-4. The Lady Cougars then added two additional runs in the top of the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Piedmont will host Oak Mountain Friday at 6 p.m.. The Lady Cougars will also host the Gwinnett Barons Saturday at noon and Loganville Christian Academy at 6 p.m.
