Cougars to Scrimmage Friday at Home

The Piedmont Academy football team completed its second week of preseason practice Friday and entered into a new phase of preparation Monday.
The Cougars began full contact work this week and will cap week three with a scrimmage against Brookwood Friday at home. The scrimmage is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Cougar Field.
“We had a very productive week,” Piedmont coach Rhett Farmer said. “It was really more of the same. We are taking a hard look at some different defensive combinations. We tried to slow things down and teach proper technique.”

There was also plenty of special teams work as Farmer said the coaches believe they now have a couple of players who can handle kicking duties.
“With our team being young in the trenches, we feel we are where we need to be,” the coach said. “We also realize things can change in a hurry and we have to keep working. We do have several non-region games to start the season and we will use them to prepare us for our region opponents.”
GISA rules have eliminated three on-the-field practice sessions during camp. Farmer said his Cougars are working twice a day this week in addition to a film session.
“We are taking a look at Brookwood this week,” Farmer said. “You don’t want to overemphasize a controlled scrimmage but our evening practices will be used to work on blocking their defensive fronts.
“We also want to make sure we are lined up properly against their Wing-T offense. We are not going to overhaul our practices to get ready for a scrimmage, but there are basic things you have to go over.”
The scrimmage will allow for the teams to run 10 offensive plays before changing possession. Farmer estimated the scrimmage would last 90 minutes.
“We will use it to see where we are,” the coach said. “The coaches will grade their positions. We are excited about being able to compete against someone else to give us a glance at how much we have progressed in certain areas. We have some question marks going into this season but we also feel we will be strong in many areas.”
