Belle Shipman Greer
Belle Shipman Greer, 94, died Sunday, August 5, 2012, at The Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello.
Mrs. Greer was born in Spruce Pine, N.C. to the late Steven George Pitman and Alice Blanche Putman Pitman. She and her late husband, Leonard Franklin Shipman, moved to Monticello in 1948. She married Bobby Greer on November 25, 1964. Mrs. Greer was the epitome of a true homemaker and was lovingly known by all as “Mama Belle.” She loved cooking, gardening, hunting and fishing. “Mama Belle’s” truest passion was being a wife, mother, and five-generation grandmother.
There was not a day that her grandchildren didn’t enter her house to the smells of fresh homemade biscuits. She was a member of Trinity Praise Center. Daughter, Linda Shipman Ellis; son-in-law, Allen Fielding Chaffin, Sr., sisters and brothers, Etta Shipman Griffith, Foye Pitman, Lucille Stafford, Ruth Galenos, Gracie Pitman, Edward “Little Man” Pitman, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her loving husband of 47 years, Bobby Lawrence Greer of Monticello; daughter and son-in-law, Janice Chaffin Jarrett and Ralph Jarrett of Monticello; son, Gary Shipman of Rutledge; son-in-law, Wayne Ellis of Spruce Pine, N.C.; grandchildren, Suzette Chaffin Chalker, Kay Allane Milner, Lynn Chaffin Jordan, Allen Fielding “Phil” Chaffin, Jr., Leonard Arnold Ellis, Robert Eric Ellis, and Cory Allen Shipman; great- grandchildren; Rebekah Jordan Mullinax, Jana Marie Scott, John Thomas Chaffin, Kristina Hulsey Bristow, Meredith Young Jordan, Joseph Allen Milner, Jonathan Robert Jordan, Jessica Chaffin Chandler, Bobbi Kate Milner, Wayne Palmer Ellis, and India Leigh Ellis; great-great-grandchildren, Kelsey Paige Walton, Kenslee Rion Ivey, Carson Capie Mullinax, Sara Elizabeth Milner, Sophia Lane Bristow, Kayleigh Elizabeth Chaffin, and Madison Chandler; and sisters, Daisy Cantrell of Lake Hopatcong, N.J., and Merle Farmer of Blacksburg, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Praise Center. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Pastor Rick Jackson will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Joey Milner, Jonathan Jordan, Mike Shipman, Al Chalker, Billy Ozburn, Richard Murray, and Bubba Greer. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas E. Woods, Griff McMichael, Joe McMichael, Jimmy Holloway, Leon Tuggle, John Hicks, Jim Worley, and Trinity Praise Center Elders and Deacons.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Trinity Praise Center, 23898 Hwy 11 N, Mansfield, GA 30055.
The family will receive friends Monday, August 6, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home.
