Monticello Hoop Stars Compete

The Monticello Hoop Stars were in action the weekend of July 14 in Morgan County.

The fourth and fifth graders, coached by Greg Robinson, played a very close game, going back and forth between the competitors. They were close each play but fell just short in the end, 30-25 to Morgan.

Overall the game was fast paced and thrilling, The players moved up and down the court, showcasing the young talent of Monticello.

The next game featured middle school students in grades six through eight. This team played two games, winning the first fairly easily verses Team Phenom.

The Hoop Stars came out early with a good lead, but their opponents never backed down and continued to close the gap in the score.

The Hoop Stars eventually tired their opposition and won the game by a large margin.

In the second game they faced Morgan Co. and in the beginning the second game mirrored the first.

The Hoop Stars used good team cooperation and talked to each other to lead them to yet another victory.

Other keys on the day included the team sharing the ball and being unselfish. They hustled and played tough defense, which would benefit the team greatly should that become their trademark.

Pastor Rufus Whitlock is the program organizer and also coaches. He said, “the fans will really enjoy watching this year’s basketball season.

“I implore basketball fans to turn up their expectations because they’re in for some amazing basketball with both the high and middle schools.

“For some of the fans who haven’t heard a lot from the Hoop Stars already this summer, we apologize for not providing updates, but the Hoop Stars have been really active this summer traveling to surrounding counties and also with a couple of more events left.”

Mr. Whitlock thanks all of the parents of the players and supporters who have contributed to the Hoop Stars basketball summer program in whatever way.

If anyone wishes to make contributions please do so at Hamilton State Bank, said Mr. Whitlock. All donations are greatly appreciated.
