Six Jasper County 4-H’ers participated in the 2012 State 4-H Horse School which was held June 17-21 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry.
2012 State 4-H Horse School provided training opportunities for 107 youth and their horses in five different disciplines which included ranch horse, saddle seat, huntseat, stock seat, and contest events.
In addition to nearly four hours per day of riding time, 4-H’ers participated in educational classes daily which covered nutrition, vaccination programs, hoof care, anatomy, and other topics.
Evening activities were planned each night which included a trip to the new Go Fish Educational Center in Perry. Through fund raising and individual donations, Jasper County youth were awarded scholarships to help enable them to participate in this event.
Karin Newberry took part in the contest division. Morgan Patterson, Casey Elias, and Krista Mercer participated in the Stock Seat Division, and Lawton Harris and Amber Scarbrough rode in the Huntseat Division. One of the most impressive parts of the week was that four 4-H’ers won the daily divisional sportsmanship award.
This award was given to one child from each division who exhibited the best attitude, was most helpful and took exceptional care of their horse on a daily basis. Congratulations to Lawton Harris, Casey Elias, Amber Scarbrough, and Morgan Patterson.
