Tax Digest Is Set

A called Board of Tax Assessors (BOA) meeting was held last week, mainly for the purpose of approving the final 2012 digest.

The digest is a report on the values of all properties in the county and is provided to the Board of Commissioners, the city of Monticello and the school board in order for them to set mill rates which determines how much tax revenue they collect.

These three entities are scheduled to finalize their tax rates by July 1, and bills are scheduled to be mailed by the end of July for the first half to be due mid-September.

According to the approved final 2012 Digest the real property of the county totaled $419,572,177 versus the 2011 appraised value of $451,827,531, a decrease of $32.3 million. These numbers represent an eight percent decrease in the total value of all property in the county.

Elsewhere in today’s paper is the proposed millage rate for Jasper County and the Board of Education, and the city of Monticello is expected to adopt its budget next week, and set its millage rate. The county millage rate is 15.446, with a hospital mill rate of 0.851 for a total county millage of 16.297. The school raised its rate by 1 mill for a total of 18.99.
