Gene Trammell Announces Candidacy

GENE TRAMMELL

Gene Trammell has announced his intention to seek the District 3 County Commission seat.

“My wife, Jeanne, and I have lived in Jasper County for almost seven years. We moved here to be near our child, Dr. Shannon Barton and, husband, Pat, and grandchildren, Mac and Avery.

“In the mid 60s as we would pass through Monticello on the way to and from UGA we used to talk about what a neat community this appeared to be. While we’ve only lived here in Jasper County for seven years, we got here as quickly as we could and are so proud to be here.

“I hold a BS degree from UGA in Animal Science, an Ed.S in Agricultural Education, and an Ed.S in school administration. I am also a graduate of the school of hard knocks and am especially proud of that degree.”

In speaking of his experience, Mr. Trammell said, “I am a retired educator with the last 20+ years as a school superintendent. In this capacity I have had the privilege of working with some of the finest people and together we were able to accomplish some laudable goals.

“In this position I was responsible for an annual budget exceeding 40 million dollars with 900 plus employees.

“Baldwin County was the first county in the state to pass a fifth ELOST and we were able to build almost $70,000,000 in schools, all of which will be totally paid out in three years.”

Mr. Trammell listed his goals:

•For Jasper County to become a pro-active county rather than always being in the reactive mode. This can be done through the use of good strategic planning and a balanced scorecard. Without the scorecard, the strategic plan is simply that, a plan. The balanced scorecard attaches responsibility and accountability to planning.

•To build a cohesive and efficient team of all county leaders by working together, planning together, and accomplishing goals together. When one succeeds, we all succeed.

•To plan for and begin implementation of infrastructure to support growth. This is an on-going process, but a process that must begin quickly.

•I have grandchildren who love sports. I believe that says it all about my interest in seeing a strong and vibrant recreation program.

•To develop a can do attitude in county government because we can.

•To hire good county employees, set goals and priorities, hold them accountable and provide all the support possible and then stay out of the way. These people are the hands and feet of county government. Encourage and reward this.

•Be visible, be open, and be positive.

“I had the honor of serving one year as Jasper County’s interim superintendent of schools, and discovered that this county truly is a ‘diamond in the rough.’ There is so much potential and there are so many good people here that there is no excuse for us not becoming a model of success. We’re poor and we’re rural. Those are two lemon qualities that can be turned to lemonade. One person can’t do it, but together we can.

“I would consider it an honor to serve the people of Jasper County and especially those of District 3.”
