Ms. Stevens was born October 15, 1922 to the late Fredrick and Jenevia Journal of Louisville, KY.
“Miss Alma” as she was affectionately known, graduated from Louisville Central High School in 1940. Following graduation, she moved to Connecticut where she worked in the food service industry. She later returned to Louisville so that she could help care for her aging mother and sister.

“Miss Alma” was widowed and divorced. From these marriages four children were born.
“Miss Alma” was a deeply committed follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. At a very young age she professed Christ as her Savior and was baptized. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church of Louisville, one of the oldest African American congregations in Louisville. In fact, “Miss Alma’s” family was one of the founding families of the church.
“Miss Alma” moved to Monticello in 1989, Many can recall seeing her take her daily strolls around the square. “Miss Alma” loved to try out new recipes, so running over to pick up a few groceries at Red and White (Monticello Food Pride) was a treat. Her apartment was filled with magazines, like Southern Living, and a file of recipes she clipped out of the newspaper.
“Miss Alma” maintained her residence until her health failed, and she moved into The Retreat.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Mrs. Virginia Allen and Mrs. Rachel Depp.
