’Cane Tennis Team Competes at State

The Jasper County tennis team finished an exceptional season by qualifying for state competition this spring.
During regular season play, the Hurricanes defeated Greene and Putnam Counties, and Northeast Macon.
Playing for the ’Canes this season included (boys singles) Austin Pierce, Deonte’ Norwood, and Tyree Bostic.
First boys doubles included Walt Rabon and Marquel Strozier. Second boys doubles were Steven Bradley and Zeb O’Kelley. Playing singles for the girls were Kaitlan Needham, Amanda Cameron, and Gracie Cummings.

First girls doubles players included C.J. Jackson and Ke’Ausha Warren. Second girls doubles were Samantha Johnson and Brandi McMichael. Alternates this year included Heather Anderson and Abbie Lindbloom.
The Canes traveled to Morgan Co. Thursday, April 19 to compete in region competition. The girls defeated Lamar County to finish third in region. The boys finished fourth in region.
Both teams advanced to the first round of state playoffs. The boys traveled to Bleckley County on Monday, April 23 where they played a hard fought match. Bleckley came out on top and ended the ’Canes state run. The girls traveled to Screven County on April 24.
“This was my first season coaching in almost 10 years,” said Jennifer Curry. “I enjoyed the players and coaching again and look forward to building a strong tennis program. We have a great group of girls coming back next year and should be extremely competitive.
“The boys are losing several seniors, however I look forward to the possibilities with the freshmen coming up.”
