‘Canes Control Their Own Destiny

CLAY HARDY PITCHES AT HISTORIC LUTHER FIELD

The ‘Canes put on an offensive show during their last three games by scoring 43 runs in three region wins during a span of four days.

They also kept their playoff hopes alive as they demolished Northeast Macon 17-2 last Friday, followed by a 15-4 and a 11-4 shellacking of Southwest Macon in a double header Monday.

In spite of these three wins, the team is now faced with a four-game stretch versus region opponents in order to get to the playoffs.

Their ace in the hole is that they are all home games. The first one was scheduled for yesterday, April 18, versus Putnam, a team the ‘Canes defeated 1-0 earlier in the season.

They are also scheduled to face Greene County tomorrow, April 20, Crawford next Monday, April 23, and Lamar next Wednesday, April 25. Action for all games is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the field adjacent to the middle school.

It gets a little complicated, but Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins explained it this way:

“We’re looking at going to the playoffs as a number three or four seed. If we win out in this four-game series we’ll go as a number three seed and face the number two seed in Region 3AA. If we end up winning three and losing one in this series we’ll go as a number four seed as long as one of those wins is against Crawford County, and assuming that Crawford loses to Morgan. Two or more losses and we’ll be playing our last game of the year against Eastside on April 26.”

Not only will the ‘Canes have the home field advantage in these last four region games, but they also have some depth at pitching. Coach Jenkins said, “We’ve been working all season toward building some depth at pitching, and right now we have seven or eight pitchers who can start for us and give us some quality innings.”

Coach Jenkins summed the situation up when he said, “As a team this is a situation you want to be in—holding your own destiny. You don’t want to back into the playoffs. This situation will make us win our way in, which we are more than capable of doing.”
