’Canes Pick Up Back-to-Back Wins

The ‘Canes picked up their first region win Friday, March 16, when they defeated Northeast Macon 13-1 in a game that was ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Brady McMichael picked up the win by pitching five strong innings without giving up a hit and only allowing one base runner. Taylor Fields came on to pitch the bottom of the fifth and final inning. A.J. Thomas, Quinton Standifer and Fields led the hitting at the plate.

Prior to that game, the ‘Canes defeated Social Circle for the second time this season, 8-2.

Dee Chapman was on the mound and picked up the win after being relieved by Jonathan Bell. Kevin Camp and Patrick Clement led the hitting in that game.

Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “The game versus Social Circle was the most complete game we have played all year. All three aspects of the game—pitching, hitting and defense were outstanding. We finally showed some sign of life in our hitting in the game with Northeast.

“We have a big game coming up tomorrow versus Putnam, a very well coached team. At this point in the season, if we can come up with a victory it will give us the much needed momentum going forward.”

The game scheduled for Wednesday versus Southwest Macon has been postponed due to work being done on their field.

The team will travel to Putnam tomorrow, March 23. The ‘Canes are also scheduled to travel to Crawford County next Wednesday, March 28.

In the latest action of the Junior Varsity, they won 12-2 versus Warren County Monday.

The Middle School ‘Canes, with a 5-3 overall record and a 3-3 record in the region, suffered back-to-back losses to Morgan in their latest action. However, the MS ‘Canes took both games to the seventh inning against a team that has won all its previous games via the mercy rule.

Head Middle School Baseball Coach John Graybill said, “The two losses to Morgan were closer than the scores indicated. Tyler Seawright and Chad Cain pitched superlative games. We had great fielding but couldn’t get our bats going, however, but for two errors we would have won that second game.”

The MS ‘Canes are scheduled to play Carver at home at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, March 23. They are also scheduled to play Social Circle at home at 11 a.m. Saturday.
