Even though the team has gotten off to a less than desired season, with a 1-6 record, the ‘Canes still only have one region loss, and that was to Morgan County, the team picked to win the region.
Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins believes the team can still compete in the region. He said, “We have had some very good batting practice sessions the last couple of days, and I think the players are finally buying into what we’re attempting to get across to them. And that’s making some subtle adjustments and get their timing mechanisms adjusted.
“We can still be a force in the region if we can get our bats going. Our defense and our pitching have been there and we’ve been in every game with the exception of one. All we need is for the bats to come around. Teams just seem to be pulling away from us late in the game because we can’t put any offensive pressure on them, which allows them to relax at the plate.
“The stretch of our schedule early in the season has been very competitive, and that was by design. I still have confidence in the team to come around. They have competed in every game and I have a feeling that will pay off for us in the long run.”
The junior varsity team is scheduled to play its first game today, March 15, in Baldwin.
