Piedmont Completes Regular Season

The Piedmont Academy basketball teams closed out the regular season Friday hosting Covenant Christian.

The Piedmont boys dropped a close 42-41 contest despite a game-high 22 points from Bobby Mitchell. Justin Wilson added 15 points but the Cougars could not quite earn the win.

Mitchell tried to rally the team with 15 points in the fourth quarter. Piedmont outscored Covenant 17-12 in the final eight minutes but trailed 30-24 after the third quarter.

The Lady Cougars fell 47-42 despite 15 points from Lanie King and 14 points by Hailey Burnham. Heather Tyler finished with eight points and Lucy Strickland scored five. The Piedmont girls trailed 26-23 at halftime and 35-34 after the third quarter in a game which was close throughout.

Saturday’s scheduled game against Oak Mountain was not played by mutual decision of both schools, Piedmont athletic director Danny Camp said. In the previous meeting in Monticello, the Oak Mountain boys forfeited the game after their coach took his team and left the gym.

The Lady Cougars began play in the region tournament Tuesday (see related story) while the boys were scheduled to play Central Fellowship Wednesday night. Piedmont Academy is hosting this year’s Region 1-AA tournament.
