Mat Cougars Compete at State

The Piedmont Academy wrestling team capped a successful season by competing at the GISA state tournament last weekend in Macon.

Austin Corley capped his career with a third-place showing at 285 pounds. Corley was 3-1 at state with all three wins by pin.

Payden Cantera was fourth at 195 after going 3-2 with three pins. Cantera is a freshman.

Chance Perry, also a freshman, was fifth at 138 pounds with a 2-2 mark with two pins.

Jacob Bowers, Malik Reid and Mills Smith all earned a win.

“I am proud of the way our guys competed at the state tournament,” said coach Dan Funt. “I felt like our guys gave great effort, did not quit and got great experience from it. The experience will help the returning wrestlers in the future. I am proud of the guys and look forward to next season.”
