Lady Canes Win 3, Lose 1

The Lady ‘Canes lost a close game Tuesday, 44-40, after a series of wins recently. Head Coach Dionka Davis said, “the girls played hard and well but had some costly turnovers in the end and missed free throws hurt us down the stretch.”
The individual scoring was led by Sharika Pennamon with 21, Janee Chapman with 12, Maya Stokes 4, Aaliyah Barnes with 2, and Miata Dudley with 1.
The Monticello Lady Canes won Friday, Jan. 21 versus Morgan County 44-39, keeping them on the winning side of their competition.
In the match-up versus Morgan, Chapman led the scoring with 13 points. Miss Chapman was followed by Pennamon 10, Barnes, 5 Maya Stokes, Morgan Stokes, and Dudley with 4 each, and Tierra Whitlock and Keri Davis added 2.

Head basketball coach Dionka Davis said “the girls played very well and gave a tremendous amount of effort. We are proud of the girls’ effort and determination.”
This win was the most recent of several including a win versus Lamar County, January 14, 55-50.
The scoring here was led by Pennamon with 11, Chapman with 10, Whitlock and Barnes added 8 each, Cristen Jackson and Morgan Stokes 6, Maya Stokes, 5 and Akeili Ross 1.
“The team played very well defensively. It was a good win on the road even though we did not shoot well from the free throw line. We had balanced scoring and everyone is contributing to the team in some way,” Coach Davis said.
On January 13, the girls indeed earned a dominating win at Crawford County. The ladies put up 55 points to outscore Crawford by 29, for a final score of 55-21.
Chapman led the scoring in the game with 13, Jackson had 11, Pennamon added 7, Maya Stokes 6, Ross 5, Morgan Stokes 4, Whitlock and Barnes each had 3 and Keausha Warren added 2.
Coach Davis said that her team played well on the road. They shot well from the floor as well as the free throw line. The girls gave a tremendous effort on the road.
The boy ’Canes came out on top when they defeated Pike County 60-33 Tuesday. Head coach Ernest Scott said, “great team effort last [Tuesday] night on both ends of the floor.”
The scoring was led by Cris Thomas, with 17, Josh Stone 8, Xavier Chapman, 9.
Also adding points were Destin Breaux 6, Cordea Dennis 5, Tra Jackson and Brady McMichael 4 each, Deon Epps 3, and Dondre Stodghill and Ramondo Miller added 2.
Thomas also led in rebounds with 9, while Stone and Chapman each had 4.
