Leadership Class to Begin January 28
Adult community leadership classes are set to begin January 28.
The leadership program began in 1989 and there have been over 200 graduates. This year will be the twelfth program held to help participants gain a better understanding of local government and how to become more involved in positive ways.
Have you recently moved to the community? Are you interested in becoming more involved or taking on a leadership role? How about becoming an active participant and meeting other community leaders or just becoming more knowledgeable of how local government works?
These would all be good reasons to participate in Leadership 2012.

“Are you between the ages of 18 and 100? Looking for cultural diversity and opening new doors? Then Leadership Jasper 2012 wants you!” said Rachel Torrance who directs the program.
The purpose of the community leadership program is to identify persons who have shown an interest or potential for leadership in civic or business affairs and community involvement and then to provide programs and activities so that these individuals gain a better understanding of all aspects of their community.
Communities utilizing these basic principles of success help create an environment of shared vision by bringing together diverse groups of individuals who exhibit enthusiasm and motivation for bringing positive change.
Leadership Jasper 2012 is part of a comprehensive plan to involve citizens, leaders and future leaders in the process of development decisions and governance. Together, understanding the roles of leadership and the interaction between entities can become an influential and strong component in improving the quality of life in our county, said Ms. Torrance.
The program has one all day session, one all day field trip to Atlanta and 8 to 10 meetings on Monday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. Attendance for the first day, Saturday, Jan. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., is mandatory and only one absence is permitted in order to receive the certification status.
Tuition is $75 per applicant with a limited number of scholarships available upon request.
Applications are available at the Chamber of Commerce office, 123 West Washington Street, Monticello. For more information or applications, contact Ms. Torrance, Leadership Volunteer Coordinator, at 706.468.8304 or at 706.476.2860. Deadline for applications is Monday, Jan 23.
Leadership Jasper alumni are asked to recommend participants at these same numbers. Anyone interested is encouraged to sign up. Alumni are invited to attend again since leadership is an on going process. “The dynamics are different in each group and the curriculum has evolved and changed over the years—you may be surprised by what you have forgotten!” said Ms. Torrance.
