Piedmont Boys Earn Unusual Victory

The Piedmont Academy varsity boys basketball team picked up a win in an unusual manner Monday night.
Oak Mountain, the team’s scheduled opponent, left Cougar Gym after the head coach apparently did not like the way the varsity girls game was officiated.
According to those at the game, Oak Mountain boys coach Lenny Williams, dressed in street clothes, came onto the court during the girls game upset over a call that was made. He was then ejected from the gym by the officials after much protest.

Williams, who is also athletic director of the Carrollton-based school, then took his boys team and literally left the building.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Piedmont coach Josh Daher. “I think in the end he was more embarrassed about it than anything and just decided to take his team and go home.”
Without an opponent, the Cougars held a modified team scrimmage.
School statistician Carole Tyler said she had never seen a team leave the Piedmont gym without playing the scheduled game.
The Piedmont boys were coming off a one-point loss to Nathanael Greene Saturday. The Cougars fell 30-29 after jumping out to an early 13-5 lead after the first quarter.
Jakey Dunagan scored eight points to lead Piedmont followed by Justin Wilson and Davis Kimball with seven each. Bobby Mitchell added six points while Drew Collins added a free throw.
The Cougars also suffered a tough 41-33 setback to Covenant Friday night. Wilson scored a game-high 16 points and Mitchell added 11 but the points were not quite enough.
Kimball finished with four points while Zach Beggs scored two.
The Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars defeated Covenant 36-32 last Friday on the road.
Hailey Burnham led the way with 10 points followed by Kacy Swart with eight and Heather Tyler with seven. Piedmont led 23-15 at halftime.
Anna Jones added six points while Lanie King scored three and Carley Cain finished with two.
Friday’s win was followed by a 32-22 victory against visiting Nathanael Greene Saturday. Jones was the leading scorer with 15 points followed by King with nine. Tyler and Cain both added four points.
