Mat Cougars Compete at Westfield

The Piedmont Academy Mat Cougars ventured to Westfield during the weekend for another grueling tournament.

Freshman Payden Cantera was 3-0 overall with two pins and one forfeit victory. Teammate Austin Corley was 2-0 at the event while Mitch Marsh was 1-1 with a pin for a fifth-place finish.

Jacob Bowers also earned a forfeit win while Ian Boyd, Evan Harvey, Mills Smith and Malik Reid also faced quality opposition.

“Our wrestlers faced some really tough competition in this tournament,” said coach Dan Funt. “The results showed that we need to get better. We have another tough tournament coming up at Trinity in January. Now we have a little more than a month to prepare for the region and state tournaments. I know our wrestlers will continue to improve.”

The Trinity Tournament will be held Jan. 6-7.
