Mat Canes Begin Season at Home

Wrestling action will get under way this Friday, Nov. 18, for the varsity wrestling team when they grapple with Greene and Pike Counties at 5:30 p.m.

The matches will take place at the middle school gym, rather than the high school, due to a conflict with the basketball schedule.

Of the eight senior wrestlers on the team, six of them have been part of the program since its inception three years ago.

Entering their fourth year on the team are seniors Brandon Barger, Timmy Postelwaite, Michael Chupp, Jonathan Williams and Tony Seawright.

The team went 46-18 last year, placed second in the Individual Region Tournament, second in the Regional Dual Tournament and finished in the top eight teams in the State Dual Tournament.

Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis said, “I’m excited because it’s our first graduating class, the first to go all the way through. I think we have a chance to improve over last year.

We have three region champions and one runner-up returning, and this group wants to get better. It’ll be tough to do better than we did last year, but we have the nucleus to do that, and they are pushing. It’s good to have reached the point where we have experience on our side, and that’s one of the reasons why I feel we can get better.

“We have also scheduled better competition in order to help us get better each week and get ready for the region and state tournaments.”

The middle school began their season last Saturday under Coach Justin Martin, when they traveled to Crawford to compete against eight other teams. It was the first time on the mat for some of the MS ‘Canes. Every wrestler was guaranteed at least two matches in his weight class.

The MS ‘Canes placed fifth and had several medal winners. Tyler Seawright took first place in the heavyweight division, while Chris Anglin took second place. Other medal winners included Harley Alter, Jarrett Greenway, Trevor Clement and Bryce Crawford.
