Honoring Veterans

Members of the local American Legion Post 110 have begun the practice of placing crosses with veterans’ names on them on the front lawn of the Legion building for special occasions, such as Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Members of the Legion gathered last week to put the crosses out for Veteran’s Day which was last Friday. On Thursday, the local senior center held a veterans’ breakfast and among the activities was a 21 gun salute by officers of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. Also on Thursday, the Monticello Kiwanis Club had a special Veteran’s Day program presented by Nathan Jordan (see related story, page 2).

In addition, Piedmont Academy hosted a veterans’ breakfast on Friday (see related story, page 6). The Legion, under the leadership of Fred Paul, is taking steps to become more active in the community and get more involvement from local veterans who are eligible. Currently the building at 438 East Greene Street is open on Wednesday afternoons.
