Larry Thurman Seeks City Council Seat

Larry Thurman is seeking the District 1, Post 1, City Council seat, vacated by Bryan Stanfier, who will be mayor in January. Mr. Thurman and Clinton Currie are both seeking the seat.
Mr. Thurman is the son of the late Juanita Thurman. He is married to Betty Marks Thurman. Mr. Thurman was born and raised in Atlanta and attended school in the Atlanta Public School system. His roots are in Monticello, as his late uncle (Marion Thurman) owned and operated a logging business in Monticello for several years. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970.

Before completing his tour with an honorable discharge, Mr. Thurman received his high school degree. He moved to Monticello in the mid-1970s and devoted his time to sports and recreation for youth and adults which expanded over a 20 year period. Mr. Thurman was employed at several jobs before finally becoming employed with Jasper County Public Works where he received numerous certificates ranging from bridge inspector to building commitments. He started out as a laborer and was promoted to director where he was responsible for all functions of building roads, safety, and road maintenance.
Mr. Thurman received an associate degree in general law enforcement from North American Correspondence School (NACS) in 1997 in Scranton, Pa. He is an active member of St. John C.M.E. in Monticello, where he serves as Trustee Board Chairman. He is past master of the Monticello Masonic Lodge #329. As City Council member, Mr. Thurman said he intends to address concerns regarding economic growth and development, safety for children and senior citizens, and attracting new businesses to the city.
