Hillsboro Post Office Could Be Closed

HILLSBORO POST OFFICE ON HWY. 11 SOUTH

Angela Collier, manager of Post Office operations, with the U.S. Postal Service hosted a meeting in Hillsboro Tuesday evening to hear community concerns about the possible closing of the Hillsboro Post Office.

Ms. Collier explained that the Postal Service is considering closing 3,700 offices nationwide. Community meetings are being held in each area where the post office may be closed.

Ms. Collier told those gathered, nearly 50 people, they should write down their comments and send in the cards they received by mail about the possible closure. She also told them they could call whoever they wanted to that might affect the decision.

There were many questions, and clearly a great deal of consternation about the proposed closure. Several in attendance said they felt the decision had already been made. One resident asked what the community could do to keep the post office open.

When pressed, she answered that buying more stamps there and opening post office boxes there could help. “It can’t hurt,” she said.

She said that after a short fact gathering period, the USPS allows 60 days for citizen input, and a final decision will be made after that. Basically, she said, it’s 138 days from the start until the determination is made.

One citizen expressed concern about the lack of handicapped access at the Monticello post office, which would be one alternative available to the citizens of Hillsboro.

Another citizen suggested the postal service should charge more for junk mail.

Everyone who spoke clearly wants the Hillsboro Post Office to remain open.
