Four City Races Are Contested
Bryan Standifer will be Monticello’s mayor in 2012, as no one qualified against him for the position.
Legislation was passed in the last session of the legislature for the council to go to staggered terms, so some persons are being elected to two year terms, and some to four years. Mr. Standifer’s term is two years. He will replace incumbent Glenn Newsome who did not seek re-election.
Three people are vying for the Mayor Pro-tem post vacated by Russell Gross. Councilman Bobby Jacobs announced last month he would seek the post, and he qualified for it. Also qualifying were Councilwoman Molly Pompey and Sage Edwards. So there is a three-way race for that four-year position.
For Council District 1, Post 1, the post vacated by Mr. Standifer, Clinton Currie and Larry Thurman are seeking that two-year term.
For District 1, Post 2, Ms. Pompey’s seat, Cornell Williams was the only candidate to qualify.
The District 2, Post 1 seat being vacated by Bobby Jacobs has two contenders for a two-year term. Current Mayor Pro-tem Russell Gross and local political newcomer Randy Strozier are both seeking the seat.
District 2, Post 2 Councilwoman Katherine Alexander is being challenged by Demetria Phillips.
The election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 8, and persons interested in voting in that election should be registered no later than Tuesday, Oct. 11.
The polls will also be open that day for the countywide vote on Sunday alcohol sales and a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
