Demeteria Phillips Seeks Council Seat

DEMETERIA PHILLIPS

Demeteria Lawrence Phillips qualified for the City Council race, running for District 2, Post 2, facing incumbent Katherine Alexander.

She is the daughter of Ralph Smith (paternal grandparents the late John Wesley and Sarah Mae Campbell Smith) and Minnie Lawrence (maternal grandparents the late Samuel “Bud” Ross and Mamie Lou Lawrence).

Ms. Phillips grew up in Monticello, where she was active in the Beta Club, track and field, varsity cheerleading and more. She graduated in the top 10 percent of the Jasper County High School class of 1992.

Ms. Phillips went on to receive an associate in science degree from Georgia Military College in Milledgeville in 1995, and a bachelor of arts in communication disorders from Georgia State University in 1997. Ms. Phillips received her master of education degree in speech-language pathology from Valdosta State University in 1999.

Ms. Phillips began working at Dave’s Barbecue in Monticello as a high school student. She has been employed in the field of speech-language pathology since 1996, and has worked in north Fulton County public schools, Gwinnett County public schools, nursing homes, and has provided therapy for Babies Can’t Wait (Georgia’s Early Intervention Program for children birth to three years of age). She has also owned Dynamic Therapy Solutions, LLC, since 2002. Ms. Phillips continues to provide skilled speech-language therapy diligently to children of all ages with various disorders.

She earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), of which she is a member. She holds a Georgia license from the Georgia State Board of Examiners for speech-language pathology and audiology and is a member of the Georgia Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Ms. Phillips is an Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) and attends Springfield Baptist Church in Monticello.

As a council member Ms. Phillips says she plans on “Getting Results” by addressing such issues as attracting new businesses to the city, more effective departmental spending, code enforcement in local neighborhoods, recreational facility for the youth, neighborhood revitalization and more.
