Lady Cougars Face Tough Foes

The Piedmont Academy varsity softball team battled two of its tougher opponents in recent days falling to Flint River and LaGrange.

The Lady Cougars faced the Flint River Lady Wildcats, the No. 1 team in the state, Tuesday on the road and battled them to a 7-3 contest.

“The score doesn’t reflect how well we played,” said Piedmont coach Danny Camp. “We had a good effort.” The game was tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh when Flint River had a walk off grand slam to take the win.

“They are the defending state champion and ranked No. 1 for a reason,” Camp said. “We managed to score enough to keep us in the game. It’s heartbreaking, but we hope to put it behind us.”

Kacy Swart had a solo home run and Anna Jones had an RBI double.

The Lady Cougars also dropped a 12-2 region game to LaGrange last Thursday on the road.

“We scored a couple of runs early but then they started hitting it where we weren’t,” Camp said. “I think if we would have had 15 defenders, they still would have been successful at the plate. They are a good team. That’s what it’s about in our region. They are a good softball team. We still played well enough to give ourselves a chance.”

Piedmont defeated an overmatched Griffin Christian team 12-0 Friday. Carla Martin earned the win.

The Lady Cougars will host Gatewood today, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. before hosting a doubleheader Saturday against Brentwood at 10 a.m. and Tattnall Square at 2 p.m. Camp said Tattnall Square is currently 23-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class AAA.

“The next two weeks will see us battle tested,” Camp said. “I think we have the toughest schedule in AAA. I am proud of our girls. They’ve not lost focus. They are always ready to practice and always ready to play.”

Piedmont is now 9-6 overall and 2-3 in region contests
