David Harris Ellis

David Harris Ellis, 92, of Monticello, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at The Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello.

Mr. Ellis was a lifelong resident of Monticello. His parents were the late John Bowden Ellis and Clara Thompson Ellis. He served as an aviation radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church and Monticello First United Methodist Church. He was a self-employed dairy farmer.

Mr. Ellis loved to invent and create items and restore antique guns. He received his pilot’s license at the age of 60 and flew his own plane. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He served on the Board of Education for a number of years and was a former president for the Jasper County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the American Legion Post 110.

His daughter, Carole Ellis Fuller, and son-in-law, Harold E. McCluney preceded him in death. Also, sisters, Sara Gibson, Augusta “Polly” Ellis, and Mary Davis, and brother, John Bowden Ellis, Jr. all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gassett Ellis of Monticello; daughters and sons-in-law, Dena McCluney of Waycross, Harriett and Marion Nelson of Milledgeville, and Claire and John Sirmans of Macon; and grandchildren, Matt McCluney, Michael McCluney, Clint Fuller, Roy Nelson, and Lyndell Nelson.

A graveside service was held at Monday, Aug. 29, at the Ellis Family Cemetery on Wild Road in Monticello. Dr. John Brown officiated.

The family suggests donations to the Monticello First United Methodist Church, 651 College Street, Monticello, Ga. 31064.
