Lady Cougars Fall to Gatewood

The Piedmont Academy varsity softball team continued to struggle offensively and as a result dropped a 4-0 decision to Gatewood Tuesday in Eatonton.

“They were just a better team on this day,” said Lady Cougar coach Danny Camp. “We didn’t play that bad. We had some chances with runners in scoring position. Gatewood had one big inning where they put some hits together. That was the difference.”

The game was the 1-AA opener for Piedmont who is now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in region play.

“We knew going in they would be tough,” Camp said. “They were a Final Four team like us last year. We still need to continue to work hard and be more consistent on offense. We aren’t going to hold everyone scoreless so we have to manufacture something. It’s not a lack of effort. We are just not doing well at the plate but that’s what makes it a tough game.”

The Lady Cougars did defeat Briarwood 8-0 last Thursday. Carla Martin allowed just one hit and no walks. Hailey Burnham was 2-for-4 at the plate while Heather Tyler and Anna Jones also contributed offensively.

Piedmont will play at Briarwood today, Aug. 25, at 4 p.m. before traveling to Dalton Saturday for a region doubleheader with Christian Heritage.
